Beware Yon Dragons

not thinking things through

Sept. 19, 2025, midnight

A number of years ago, the Soviet Union set fire to a pit filled with natural gas. They wanted to burn the gas out and assumed that since it was out away from any towns, then it was ok. It is currently nicknamed the gates of Hell since it is still burning 54 years later. I would guess that they did not think it would take that long. Sadly, this is a picture of what many people are doing today. They do not think through their behavior, or maybe they get advice from someone who has significant deficit in the wisdom department; then they find themselves in all kinds of horrible situations and have no idea how to escape. Much of what goes for wisdom today is actually quite foolish. It amazes me to hear or read bad advice, because it is often described in glowing terms that make many fall for it, but it is actually the complete opposite of what is sensible. Whenever I come across stories about bad advice, I am reminded of where the book of Proverbs gives a stern warning about being careful from whom you get advice. Many people think that they are wise and want to give you advice. Yet, we do not always consider the source. Would you take nutritional advice from someone whose health is a total disaster? Of course, you would not. Although Catholics are often intimidated by the Bible, especially in how it can be difficult to understand, we do have the most accurate translation of the Scriptures (presuming you are using a good translation like the Douay or the RSV Catholic edition). There is a group of books in the Old Testament that are filled with amazingly powerful wisdom, and they are referred to as the Wisdom Books (shocker!). How often do you read the Wisdom Books? Do you know what they are? Could you find where they are in the Bible quickly? The Books of Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Sirach, and Wisdom of Solomon, are the primary books in this part of the Scriptures. You should be reading them; daily. They are filled with wisdom on just about every subject you can imagine; parenting, work, finances, relationships, romance, morality, etc. Do you want to think through what you are doing, and the decisions you are making? You have a source directly from God (and it is not as hard to understand as much of the rest of the Scriptures). Go to the Word of God, pray that He will guide you, and then open your heart to learn amazing truth.
